My
great passions - next to my wife - are hunting, fishing and working with
beautiful and exotic woods, such as quilted maple, spalted maple, Coco Bola,
Bubinga and others. The beauty about knife making is that it allows me to
combine these loves.
Eleven years ago, I built my dream shop
where I design and craft knives, sheaths and presentation cases from exotic
woods. This 24 ft. X 30 ft. shop
has a heated concrete floor, sky lights and large windows that provide lots of
natural light and, of course, my knife-making and wood-working equipment, which
include two custom-made 2 in. x 72 in. grinders, two lap wheels, Baldor buffer,
20 ton press, jointer, thickness planer, table saw, chop saw and many hand
tools.
Most
days will find me and Willow, my Norwegian Elk Hound, in the shop totally immersed in the world of knives.
As many of you may know, during Elizabethan times, knife-makers' dogs were very
important to them. The knife makers would lie in a prone position for much
of the knife-making process with their dogs across the legs/feet to keep them
warm. Now Willow doesn't have to do that, but she does have to remind me
to stop for lunch!
The majority of my knives have been made
using the stock removal process. Of the approximately 200 knives I have
made, half of them have been hollow ground and the remainder flat ground.
I have recently made my first Damascus bar, which was great fun. Now
I have to decide if I have enough hours in a day to make knives, leather
sheaths, presentation cases, AND Damascus.
As a full-time knife maker, I am
constantly working to improve my knife-making skills. Knife making is a
craft that seems to have an infinite capacity for new techniques and
designs. I am continuously searching for new ideas and I regularly attend
knife-making workshops.
Most of my knives are based on my personal
hunting and fishing experiences, but I welcome your suggestions based on your
experiences and your needs.
